Welcome to Know Your Numbers Week 2024

The UK’s largest blood pressure testing and awareness campaign! This week is all about helping you understand and monitor your blood pressure to reduce your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other serious health issues.

Why Know Your Numbers?

High blood pressure, often referred to as the “silent killer,” affects millions of people across the UK. Shockingly, around one-third of adults are living with high blood pressure and may not even know it. This condition rarely has noticeable symptoms but can lead to life-threatening complications if left unchecked.

During Know Your Numbers Week, we aim to empower you with the knowledge and resources needed to understand your blood pressure readings and take action to improve your health. By knowing your numbers, you can make informed lifestyle choices that protect your heart and overall well-being.

How to Get Involved

  • Find a Pressure Station Near You: Sussex Premier Health will be offering free blood pressure checks at our Hastings Hospital so please pop in and take advantage of this vital health service. It’s quick, free, easy, and could save your life.
  • Check at Home: If you have a home blood pressure monitor, this is the perfect time to put it to use. Regular home monitoring can provide a more accurate picture of your health over time. Make sure to record your readings and consult your GP if anything is out of the ordinary.
  • Spread the Word: Use social media to share your experience and encourage others to check their blood pressure. Use the hashtag #KnowYourNumbers to join the conversation and raise awareness.
  • Attend Local Events: Many communities and workplaces will be hosting health events throughout the week. These events often include health talks, fitness classes, and healthy living tips. Check your local listings and get involved!

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Numbers

  • Ideal Blood Pressure: Typically, a reading under 120/80 mm Hg is considered healthy. Consistently high readings (140/90 mm Hg or higher) indicate hypertension, which requires medical attention.
  • What Does It Mean? The first number (systolic) measures the pressure when your heart beats. The second number (diastolic) measures the pressure when your heart rests between beats. Both numbers are essential for assessing your heart health.

Take Action: Lower Your Blood Pressure

Lifestyle Changes: Even small adjustments can make a significant impact. Reducing salt intake, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol can all help lower your blood pressure.

Talk to Your GP: If your readings are consistently high, your doctor can guide you through the next steps, which may include medication, lifestyle advice, and ongoing monitoring.
